Crash diets and extreme detoxes don’t work for the following reasons.
We live in a culture where we are always in a hurry, including when it comes to food. Drastic diets, quick detoxes and overly strict plans may offer instant results, but they neglect a crucial fact: the body requires gentleness and consistency. Studies show that most restrictive diets don’t work in the long run. They can also have a negative effect on our relationship with food and our self-image.
What does “intuitive eating” mean when we’re on a retreat?
At One Life, we don’t believe in dogma or strict rules. Instead, we encourage people to listen to their own thoughts and feelings. Intuitive eating means being present at the table, recognising feelings of hunger and fullness, and enjoying food with all your senses. It’s not just what you eat that matters, but how you eat. You should respect your body.
How are the menus designed at One Life? The answer is simple: seasonality, locality and simplicity.
Every meal is a way of showing love for the earth and the natural world. The menus are created from local, seasonal ingredients, mostly plant-based, with vegan or vegetarian options. Slow cooking with mild spices and aromatic herbs keeps the ingredients’ vibrant taste and energy. Meals become special times that nourish both the body and the soul.
The benefits of daily rituals around the table
Eating becomes a special event when we do it in a certain way: we take a deep breath before we start, we don’t say anything for the first few minutes, and we think about how thankful we are for the food. This makes digestion better, calms you and makes eating more meaningful. At One Life, meals are not just a break from eating, but a way to plan and prepare for the day.
A simple recipe and a ritual: warm lentil soup with sage and silence.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup red lentils
- 1 onion
- 1 carrot
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 3 fresh sage leaves
- Salt, turmeric, black pepper
Preparation:
Fry the onion and carrot in oil, then add the lentils and spices that you have already washed. Pour in water and boil for 20–25 minutes. Add the sage at the end. Serve it hot with a teaspoon of cold-pressed oil.
Ritual: before eating, close your eyes. Take a deep breath. Feel the warmth in your hands. Say thanks for the food. Then, take your time and enjoy the flavour.
How to make this lifestyle work at home
You don’t need to go away to eat intuitively. Make sure you have enough space around the table. Put your phone and newspapers to one side, and focus on eating. Choose foods that are simple, in season, and carefully prepared. Light a candle, play some soft music and enjoy every texture. Your body will thank you for it, as you’ll have more energy and peace of mind.
